FIRST, THE LANGUAGE

First the language is an ongoing long term project about canadian native language born in the small Mi’kmaq reserve Listuguj where I was welcomed and invited to participate to the native language classes, through which the young people of the community have begun a process of recovering of their culture, which, like all indigenous ones, is transmitted orally.

While a large number of Canadians is worrying about the losing of the national identity, because of the immigration and the resulting multiculturalism, and while Québec Province is discussing about the obligatory nature of the French language, the native culture is still not regarded as the true and authentic root of this country. After decades of lack of a proper culture transmission, young people are trying to take back their traditions, starting from their language.
